Kangaroos are marsupials. “Macropodidae” is the name of the family which includes kangaroos, wallaroos, wallabies, tree-kangaroos, forest wallabies and pademelons.
Size and Life Expectancy
There are almost sixty species of kangaroos. The largest is the red kangaroo. Males can weigh up to 200 lbs (90 kg) and be 6.5 feet (2 meters) tall. Females are smaller and males don’t normally get so tall, normally reaching more like five feet (1.5 meters). Kangaroos live about 15 years long. The smallest macropod is the musky rat kangaroo which is about a foot (.3 meters) long and weighs about a pound (.5 kg).
Range and Habitat
Kangaroos live in Australia and Tasmania and other islands near Australia. They live in forests and grasslands.
Diet
Moslty grass.
Predators
Foxes, dingoes, feral cats.
Extra Fun Facts
Kangaroos can swim. They move by jumping and can go up to 35mph (55 km/hr) and can jump 30 feet (9.1 meters) far and six feet (1.8 meters) high. They can go for a long time without drinking water because they can get liquid from the grass they eat. When kangaroos "box" they sometimes hold themselves up with their tail and kick with their feet.
