Dromaius novaehollandiae is the name of the emu family. There are three subspecies of emus. The closest relative of the emu is the southern cassowary which is shorter but heavier than the emu and which also lives in Australia.
Size and Life Expectancy
Emus can be more than 6 feet (1.8 meters) tall and weigh up to 100 lbs (45 kg).The female is larger than the male. They can live over ten years.

They live in the grasslands and forests of Australia.

Young emus are taken by dingoes and eagles. Lizards eat their eggs..
Extra Fun Facts
Emus can run up to 30mph (50 km/hr). After the female has laid the eggs the male sits on them and doesn't eat or drink until they hatch in about eight weeks. Emus have been known to travel up to fifteen miles (25 km) per day.
